Emotional regulation

For some people, due to a combination of genetics and life experiences, emotions can be very strong, appear to come out of nowhere, and be very difficult to change. People who experience emotional regulation difficulties often describe feeling like they are adrift on an ocean. They describe being pushed and pulled by the waves of emotions they experience with little influence or control over the direction they go. Often people take drastic action to cope with these waves of emotions, and at times can engage in behaviours which give short term relief, but actually make things worse. These behaviours may include self-harm, using substances, or engaging in other risky behaviours.
